Stronsay
You’ll depart Kirkwall and sail up the west coast of Shapinsay. As you pass Galt Skerry and the point of Galtness at the northwest tip of Shapinsay, look to the west to get a good view of the single-hill island of Gairsay with its satellite islands the Holm of Boray to the south and Sweyn Holm to the north. Beyond Gairsay, you’ll see the stepped profile of Rousay to the west with low-lying Wyre in the foreground. Once past Shapinsay, look to the east you'll see the vertical cliff of Rothiesholm Head in Stronsay appear and on a clear day, the island of Auskerry and its lighthouse can be seen on the horizon. Then you'll approach the Green Holms and the Falls of Warness, where strong tides can make this part of the journey a bit less smooth. You’ll see the island of Eday to the north and after passing her south-eastern tip you’ll enter Spurness Sound, now overlooked by Sanday’s windfarm. You will pass several small islands (holms) such as the three-island chain of the Spurness Holms. You will skirt Huip Ness on the north coast of Stronsay before turning into Papa Sound between Papa Stronsay and Whitehall village.
Your route may deviate if the ferry is first calling at Eday or Sanday. Please enable your location to be shared and use the map function to find out about additional points nearer to these islands.
