The journey to Rousay
As you depart Tingwall you will leave the mainland behind, with the large turbines at Hammars hill standing sentinel over the Evie hillside. You will get a good view of the island of Gairsay to the east, before nearing Eynhallow sound. The small island of Eynhallow can be seen between Orkney mainland and Rousay, with fast-flowing streams of water on either side. These often interact with waves to produce very turbulent water (tidal roosts).
Your ferry will round the Wyre skerries buoy, avoiding the shallow reefs at the west end of Wyre, before following Rousay’s coastline into the pier at Brinian. You will see Rousay’s towering hillside with its heathery terraces to the north contrasting with the low-lying Wyre to the south.
