Learn more about Rousay

Rousay boasts rugged uplands, dramatic cliffs and many famous archaeological sites. The rich archaeological heritage gives the island its nickname: the ‘Egypt of the North’. Rousay is a great location for wildlife watching. At the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) reserve at Trumland you can see moorland breeding birds such as Red-throated diver. Seabirds abound on the dramatic cliffs and the sea channels around Rousay are good places to watch out for passing cetaceans.

Rousay’s population is currently around 200, with the largest settlement being at Brinian, where the ferry arrives and departs.
