Papa Westray (or Papay) is one of Orkney’s remotest inhabited islands. It has a population of around 90 people who form a tight-knit and vibrant community. The island is best known for its famous Neolithic archaeological site the Knap of Howar, but also for its fantastic bird-life which can be seen around the island. The RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) reserve at North Hill consists of maritime heathland and its cliffs are home to many of Orkney’s best-loved seabirds such as puffins and guillemots.
