Egilsay is a low-lying island with a current population of around 20 people. The main industry is agriculture. Around a third of the island is owned by the RSBP (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) and is managed to encourage the island’s Corncrake population.
Egilsay is famed as the location for the martyrdom of St Magnus around 900 years ago and it is now the starting point for walkers who are completing the pilgrimage route, the St. Magnus Way. An unusual round-towered church was built in his memory and is one of the island’s focal points.
