Eday is a long, thin island with some very interesting geology, especially noticeable at the ‘Red Head’ cliffs at its north end. There is a rich natural and cultural heritage, much of which is revealed in the Eday Heritage Centre and Heritage Trail. Eday’s mix of habitats is reflected in prolific bird life. Red-throated diver’s nest at Mill Loch and the extensive areas of moorland support numerous breeding birds including, Arctic skua, Great skua and Short-eared owl. Today the island is home to around 130 people and is also the location of the tidal test facility for the European Marine Energy Centre.
