You might see a variety of birdlife on the loch, such as the Whooper Swan. The loch is what is known in Orkney as an ‘Oyce’ behind and ‘Ayre’. These words derive from Norse Óss and Eyrr. The Ayre is a shingle beach which has a trapped body of water behind it (the Oyce).
