When Burroughs retired from military service and married Eliza D’Oyly Geddes, the couple moved to his Rousay estate. After a few years at Westness they decided to build a grander residence and hired architect David Bryce, who had also designed Balfour Castle in Shapinsay. Burroughs is known for continuing his great-Uncle’s clearances of tenants from their crofts. He punished those tenants who stood up against him by evicting them from their homes. The house is surrounded by 50 acres of terraced gardens, gravel walkways and woodland.
