The 8ft diameter stone ball which sits atop the Old Beacon in North Ronaldsay came from Start Point’s original unlit stone tower. This lighthouse, designed by Robert Stevenson (grandfather of the famous author Robert Louis Stevenson) was the first in Scotland to have a revolving light. Its white flashes of light, which repeat every 8 seconds, can be seen 18 nautical miles away. It is now automated and powered by solar energy. If you plan to visit, make sure and check the tides as the causeway to Start Point becomes submerged at high tide.
Tours of the lighthouse can sometimes be arranged. Check with Sanday Development Trust for more information.
