The locals believed that Burroughs had constructed the pier for the main purpose of transporting stone for building his mansion. His boat, the steam vessel Lizzie Burroughs made regular trips between Sourin, Egilsay, Trumland, Wyre, Hullion, Evie, Tingwall, Gairsay, Rendall Point and Kirkwall. The store was used to house cargo which had been transported by the steamer. The Rousay Egilsay and Wyre Development Trust has plans to develop the store into a heritage facility in the near future.

Behind the pier store is the newly renovated Rousay heritage center and ferry waiting room.
