One of the old sheepfolds can be seen as a ruin in the southeast corner of the island. Tommy Gibson of Rousay remembered a horse swimming from the holm to Egilsay: “Sometimes the Horse of Scockness was put across for a few weeks in the summer. The only means to get a large animal to the Holm was to swim them across. I have heard that for the first week or so the horse grazed on the side nearest to Scockness. Once a thunderstorm frightened the horse and they took to the sea and landed in Egilshay. They came back by steamer.” If you look over to Rousay from here, you’ll see the Sourin Brae which goes from 13m to 111m above sea level. To the right of the brae, near the shore is Sourin Mill, which is currently being restored. To find out more about the mill click here: https://rousayremembered.com/sourin-part-1-of-4/
