Eynhallow is also the site of an early chapel, perhaps no surprise as the name Eynhallow means ‘Holy Isle’. It is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest as it is a breeding ground for the Common Seal (actually the less common of Orkney’s two seal species, the other being the Grey seal).
The island is steeped in folklore, most famously in the story of how Eynhallow became holy. Scroll down to listen to Orkney Storyteller Tom Muir telling the tale. You’d better keep a good eye on the island, as legend has it that it is not always visible to human eyes and could disappear suddenly if not kept within sight.
