Unfortunately for Haakon he was defeated at the battle, and returned to Kirkwall, where he subsequently died at the Bishop’s Palace. Around the east side of the bay there are traces of old boat nousts and jetties from bygone days. Here the bay is also bordered by ‘The Riff’ a tidally submerged rib of rock which extends as far as Helliar Holm.
