The turbine is rated at 900kW; that means that during one hour of ideal wind conditions, it would generate 900 kWh (units) of electricity. In two decades, the turbine is expected to earn £2.7 million for the community. It was opened by the pupils of Rousay school in 2012 and at the time the pupils buried a time capsule containing their aspirations for the future. The capsule will be reopened in 2031 when the turbine is decommissioned.
