This is where a 46m long concrete coal barge rests in the shallow water, and can be clearly seen at low tide. It is one of the physical remnants of Stronsay’s herring industry, used as one of the floating coal bunkers to supply the steam herring boats (drifters). As many as five coal barges were moored near Whitehall for this purpose. This barge (named ACW11) belonged to the Peterhead Coal Company. She broke free of her moorings in a storm in 1936, coming to a rest here and not moving since.
