The island’s location, on the flight-path of many migrating species, makes it a stop-over for birds which would be rarely seen elsewhere in the country. The observatory is positioned not far from the pier and is one of the most prominent buildings as you approach by ferry. It was established in 1987 and plays an important scientific role in research and bird ringing.
