Interesting buildings include the Smithy which is now Shapinsay’s heritage centre and the gas storage tower. The cylindrical stone building is very grandly built but had the utilitarian job of supplying gas lighting to Balfour castle and the village. As you get off the ferry you can also view the curious seawater flushing toilet next to the pier and the impressive gatehouse with mock portcullis.
